BYT - FLAT

BRIEF:

The primary task was to design the interior of a small urban studio apartment with an area of 33 m² in Prague’s Karlín district. The aim was to create full-value contemporary living within a single main room. It was necessary to develop a new functional layout that would naturally accommodate a kitchen, dining area, living space, and sleeping zone without the apartment feeling cramped.

CONCEPT:

The fundamental principle of the design became maximum spatial clarity and architectural “cleaning” of the interior. A light grey cement-epoxy floor finish was proposed for the main living space, combined with underfloor heating, which helps eliminate moisture and cold—issues typical for apartments located on the first underground level. At the same time, this material visually unifies and brightens the space.

A key element of the interior is custom-designed built-in furniture. Through a continuous furniture wall extending along both opposite sides of the room, all essential functions were discreetly integrated into the apartment. On one side, a fully equipped kitchen was designed in white laminate, including built-in appliances, a slim dishwasher, and a refrigerator. This section also incorporates a fixed work corner with a desk for a computer and adjoining storage units.

On the opposite side, a furniture wall conceals a fold-down double bed. During the day, the sleeping area can be closed, allowing the apartment to function as an open living space without visual clutter. Adjacent to the bed, space was created for a wall-mounted TV on a swivel arm, additional storage cabinets, and a small reading nook with shelves.

The design also includes a custom-built “bench” sofa, beneath which a pull-out pouf is hidden. Depending on use, it can serve as a footrest or an extra seating element. The living area is complemented by an extendable dining table, which in its basic position seats two people but can be expanded to accommodate up to 4–6 guests. The table can be flexibly combined with dining chairs or stackable stools, with one of the chairs also serving the work corner.
