SCULPTOR’S STUDIO
BRIEF:
The aim was to design the interior of a sculptor’s studio with a total area of 84 m² (working area 52 m², day room with kitchenette 11.15 m², bathroom with WC 3.9 m², and garage 16.98 m²).
An important task was to design a functional internal layout allowing the entire space to be flexibly adapted to current needs. The brief also included designing the maximum possible amount of concealed closed storage to protect tools due to the increased dust typical of sculptural work. The space is conceived as visually unified and unobtrusive. For this reason, the interior is designed predominantly in white (steel structure, cabinets, equipment), combined with a neutral light-grey white-concrete floor screed.
CONCEPT:
As the studio reaches approximately 4 m at the roof ridge and about 2.8 m at the lowest point above the windows, the intention was to make maximum use of this height. Along the entire front wall of the space, an inserted walkable mezzanine made of steel grating is designed, supported by a cantilevered steel structure.
This provides access to the upper level of storage cabinets extending along the full length of the wall. The upper parts of the cabinets and shelving are enclosed with large-format sliding doors to save space and to accommodate the reduced depth of the walkable platform from which the storage is accessed.
Beneath the structure, a continuous row of shallow base cabinets runs along the wall. The central working zone is complemented by offset mobile worktables on castors, which can be freely extended and connected within the space. Beneath these tables, smaller independent tables with storage and drawers are designed, also on castors. These units can be used individually as plinths or modelling stands. When several units are combined, an additional working surface is created, allowing the placement of a larger wooden board as an extension of the workspace.
In the left part of the studio (near the wall adjacent to the garage), the walkable platform is interrupted. In this zone, steel columns extending to the ceiling are designed, with a pulley suspended at their top for lifting heavy objects and models. This area also includes a mobile rotating platform serving as a base for modelling larger sculptures. The turntable can be freely moved throughout the space. All details and specifications of the steel structure will be resolved in the subsequent project phase in cooperation with metalworkers and specialist consultants.
In the right part of the studio (along the wall adjoining the kitchenette and bathroom), a utility sink is designed. The sink must be equipped with a hand shower and a floor drainage channel for washing moulds. This entire corner is designed with waterproof concrete screed and the possibility of enclosure with a shower curtain. Details will be specified in the next project phase. Concrete screed on the walls is also designed in the bathroom.
The entire inserted mezzanine is accessible via sliding ladder stairs. On site, it will be necessary to further specify the dimensions of the storage area newly designed above the bathroom, accessible from the walkable platform on the working side of the studio.
The day room is designed with a brown leather sofa and complemented by a built-in kitchenette in light grey, matching the concrete floor screed. The kitchen unit provides sufficient storage cabinets along the full length of the room wall.
