NADĚJE - SHELTER
BRIEF:
The proposal focuses on a new design for the reception area and meeting room of the Naděje shelter in Prague–Žižkov. The facility serves male clients in difficult life situations and is located in the courtyard of an old gallery-access building. The aim was to create a functional, durable and dignified environment for both clients and staff.
The reception fulfils several roles at once – client intake and registration, a communication hub connecting different parts of the building, and a small social space for meetings, computer use or spending free time. The second part of the project is a meeting room intended exclusively for staff meetings with sponsors and partners.
CONCEPT:
The central theme of the proposal is hope, reflected primarily through the use of light. The interior is based on a contrast between robust, hard-wearing materials such as concrete and steel, forming the structural “shell” of the space, and softer light accents that introduce a human and emotional dimension.
A key element is a lighting installation using gold thermal foil, commonly associated with emergency situations. Combined with light, it creates shifting reflections and a warm golden glow, symbolising a new beginning and the possibility of change. This motif recurs throughout the interior and visually connects the individual spaces.
Due to hygienic requirements, the use of wood was intentionally avoided. The material palette therefore relies on metal, concrete and other durable surfaces, complemented by recycled elements such as refurbished chairs and indoor plants, which soften the space and bring a sense of life.
The meeting room is designed in a calmer, more formal manner. Its main elements are a large conference table, a bookcase and newly designed lighting suitable for both meetings and presentations. The space supports concentration and a professional atmosphere while maintaining visual continuity with the reception area.
The project works with contrasts between street and home, hopelessness and a new beginning. The goal was to create a space with a clear identity that feels dignified and provides clients and staff with a safe, respectful environment — a place that does not feel temporary, but instead supports positive change.
