THE TRIM – HAIR SALON
BRIEF:
It was necessary to design the interior of THE TRIM hair salon for Daniel and Bára Pašek. The salon is a well-established brand whose existing branch in Karlín no longer met capacity requirements. The brief was to create a complete conceptual design for a new, larger space located in the corner ground floor of the Fragment building, including facilities for 7 cutting stations, 4 washing units, a representative reception, and full operational back-of-house for clients and staff.
CONCEPT:
Following the already developed layout of cutting stations in collaboration with architect Daniel Falťan, a clear and strong concept of the so-called “metal amoeba” was developed. This spatial structure connects the front part of the salon with the reception, a VIP washing unit, and two cutting stations to the rear part of the salon, where three additional washing units and five cutting stations are located.
The amoeba structure visually separates the clean, representative front part of the salon from the back-of-house, which includes a small kitchenette with a coffee machine, storage areas, two toilets, a technical room, and a large staff kitchen with a dining counter. The back-of-house also includes a concealed relaxation room with a small window fitted with mirrored glass, allowing views out and into the salon while preventing views inside.
Upon entering the space, the dominant feature is a stone reception desk conceived as a freestanding object. Above this “stone sculpture,” a minimalist linear light fixture is suspended in contrast. Part of the metal structure behind the reception includes a special cut-out – an “eye” – with an integrated fridge where clients can select soft drinks and small refreshments. In the adjacent curved niche, Kevin Murphy hair cosmetics are displayed as a natural part of the overall concept.
The VIP washing unit is hidden behind the sheet-metal wall of the amoeba and provides maximum privacy for clients, enhanced by curtains both at the windows and within the structure itself. Additional washing units are located in the rear part of the salon and can be concealed if needed by an эффектní metal curtain, whose form complements the organic shape of the amoeba.
SPACE AND DETAIL:
The corridor connecting the front and rear parts of the salon is conceived as a distinct spatial experience. It is defined by a winding sheet-metal structure and a ceiling formed by rippled metal evoking a water surface. The amoeba wraps around the core of the entire back-of-house and is formed by a structure clad in bent galvanized sheet metal. Its body contains passages to individual rooms as well as smaller openings intended for displaying objects, chocolates, or so-called art windows – shaped apertures for artistic elements behind glass.
Material-wise, the design works with a combination of metals (galvanized steel, stainless steel), grey-stained veneer inspired by Ettore Sottsass, and stone in the form of the reception object. The selected palette is deliberately timeless and neutral, allowing the space to be gradually enriched with art and design objects without the risk of visual overload.
A distinct role is played by the cutting mirrors, designed as organic, double-sided sculptural elements. They feature a stainless-steel frame, integrated LED backlighting, and a rotating shelf for small items. Stability is ensured by a concrete base. Storage areas are designed as a variable system that allows larger surfaces to be opened or closed, thus changing the atmosphere of the salon. The interior of the cabinets can be colour-accented or supplemented with typography and artistic interventions.
