NUSLE - FLAT
BRIEF:
The interior of a 3+kk apartment with a total area of 79 m², located in an old apartment building in Nusle, was designed for a young family expected to grow in the future. The layout of the apartment was largely predefined, and the design therefore focused primarily on creating sufficient storage space, a new kitchen, and a complete reconstruction of the bathroom and WC, as well as furnishing the bedroom and the main living area.
CONCEPT:
The interior design aims for a contemporary expression while respecting the atmosphere of the building and the period in which it was constructed. One of the key motifs became the original wooden glazed doors leading to a balcony facing a quiet inner courtyard, together with an emphasis on authentic materials and their surfaces.
The apartment features high ceilings, which were originally suppressed by low and poorly proportioned doors. This imbalance was resolved through the use of flush doors with transom windows, whose height and proportions relate to the balcony doors and help the space to “breathe” again. At the same time, the main entrance to the living room with kitchen was widened, visually opening the apartment and enhancing its sense of spaciousness.
A strong unifying element of the interior is the black-and-white geometric cement tile Vasarely, evoking historical floor patterns typical of Prague apartment buildings. The tiles are used in the entrance hall, bathroom, utility room, and WC, where they are complemented by white ceramic wall tiles with black grout. This motif subtly continues into the kitchen, which is designed in a neutral white tone.
Built-in furniture throughout the apartment combines white and black surfaces, lacquered metal, oak veneer, and solid wood. The main living space connects the living room with the kitchen and a built-in library featuring a bench and dining table, complemented by refurbished chairs. In the bedroom and other living areas, the original oak parquet floors have been preserved, newly sanded, and refinished.
The entire apartment is conceived as a compact and functional whole, forming a neutral base for the future addition of personal objects, standalone furniture, and decorations according to the owners’ taste.
