COTTAGE "JIZERKY"
BRIEF:
The aim of the project was the reconstruction of the ground floor of a traditional mountain log house in Josefův Důl. The brief focused on increasing user comfort, particularly in terms of heating, and on the renovation of the main living spaces – the living room, kitchen, hallway, entrance with bathroom, and the porch. The proposal also included the sensitive integration of a newer extension so that it would naturally merge with the original cottage.
CONCEPT:
The core principle of the design is respect for the character of the mountain house and a focus on traditional materials and craftsmanship. A new tiled stove becomes the dominant interior feature, working together with wood as a natural source of both warmth and atmosphere.
The main living room is conceived as a multifunctional space. Its key element is a modular wooden seating system with integrated beds and storage, which can be easily adapted into full-value sleeping accommodation. The space is completed by a large solid wood table that serves as the natural centre for shared activities.
The kitchen follows the traditional logic of a mountain cottage. A new wooden kitchen with stained cabinet fronts and ceramic tiles is complemented by preserved elements such as an old dresser and a small stove. The space is further enriched by a wooden bench with storage and new glazed doors that bring daylight into the hallway.
The bathroom is designed in a restrained and material-efficient way. Cement plaster on the walls evokes traditional renders, the shower is conceived as a wooden tub, and the floor is sloped towards a linear drain. An adjacent room allows for flexible use, either as a secondary bathroom or as a technical space with laundry and storage.
The entrance area is adapted to mountain conditions, offering sufficient space for shoes, coats, and drying wet clothing or ski equipment. The porch is proposed for renewal in a traditional spirit, including a wooden structure and integrated wood storage that also acts as a visual screen.
The overall design relies on simple means and emphasizes authenticity, functionality, and a natural relationship between the house and its mountain surroundings.
