BRIEF:

The project focuses on a conceptual renovation of the SYRIUS funeral home in Kladno. The space is located within an older residential building and includes an entrance hall and two meeting rooms. The aim was to create a dignified, calm, and sensitive environment for bereaved families, while allowing flexible day-to-day use by the staff.

 

CONCEPT:

The central design theme is the curtain — a recurring element throughout the interior that enables subtle control of atmosphere. Curtains are mounted on ceiling tracks following the geometry of the rooms, including rounded corners. This allows spaces to be gently opened or closed and their character adapted to different situations and needs.

 

Curtains also conceal shelving systems and newly integrated storage, eliminating the visual clutter of the original layout and creating a calm, cohesive interior that avoids a technical or institutional feel.

 

Another key intervention was the removal of the original heavy carpeting and the restoration of historic parquet floors, which returned material quality and natural elegance to the space and established a solid, dignified base for the interior.

 

The colour palette is restrained and timeless. Black-stained wooden elements add depth, grey curtains contribute to a calming atmosphere, and subtle gold accents in metal details and lighting enhance a sense of dignity and seriousness. The interior is softened with discreet decorative elements — flowers, textiles, chairs, and artwork — bringing a human and approachable quality.

 

The proposal creates a space that respects the gravity of the situations taking place within, while offering staff the flexibility to respond sensitively to different moods and needs. The result is a calm, adaptable, and dignified environment that avoids pathos and instead provides room for silence, reflection, and farewell.
