HOUSE- CHOCERADY
BRIEF:
The proposal focuses on the reconstruction of a family house in Chocerady, transforming a former multi-generational home into full-value housing for a young, larger family. The house, with an approximate usable area of 150 m², is situated on an elevated plot overlooking the Sázava River, which represents one of its key qualities.
CONCEPT:
The main principle of the design is the removal of later additions, extensions, and insensitive alterations, and a return to the honest character of a traditional rural house. The elevated position of the plot not only allows views into the surrounding landscape but also provides a natural separation from the adjacent road.
The internal layout is simplified and unified – the original two entrances are reduced to a single main entrance, restoring the building’s natural role as a family home. By adjusting the entrance hall and staircase, a former walk-through bedroom was eliminated and full-value living spaces were re-established.
The ground floor is designed as a more open and functional whole. The kitchen with dining area is closely connected to the living room, which has a direct relationship to the covered terrace behind the house, oriented towards the rock face. This space offers a pleasant microclimate even during summer months. Between the kitchen and living room, a generous opening with sliding doors allows for flexible separation or connection of the two zones.
The ground floor also includes a separate WC and a spacious bathroom with a shower, bathtub, and laundry area. The bathroom is complemented by a new window opening facing the rock, providing natural ventilation and daylight. The rear extension is proposed for removal and replacement with a new, higher-quality structure while preserving the original building volume.
The upper floor offers two cosy rooms with preserved wooden floors and original doors, whose refurbishment helps maintain the authentic spirit of the house. The proposal also explores the potential use of part of the attic for additional functions such as a study, bathroom, or storage.
The façade is treated in a traditional manner, with emphasis on materiality, texture, and colour. New wooden windows respect the character of the building while meeting contemporary living standards. A muted light blue tone runs throughout the project, referencing the Czech countryside and naturally blending the house into its surroundings.
